The company's marketing guy neither confirmed nor denied it, which means that he's just looking for the right spin

NetherRealm Studios’ upcoming fighting game Mortal Kombat X might have microtransactions.

It’s always bad news when a full-price game gets microtransactions, however you look at it, since their presence enforces a certain design geared toward getting money from impatient people, which usually means that you can kiss a decent progression system goodbye.

Some people are better at making them work than others though, and hopefully developer NetherRealm Studios will figure out how to get more money from its fans without impacting the experience of those who feel that paying the admission price is enough to get the full experience, also known as regular people.

In any case, the upcoming brawler is set to deliver a solid experience for Mortal Kombat fans, adding a bunch of new characters and bringing online competition to a whole new level.

The developer has just revealed that gamers will be able to join one of the game’s five factions and then compete with players all around the world. The faction wars will not be limited to one-on-one matches, as players will be able to serve their cabal even through playing the single-player story mode.

Brace yourselves, microtransactions are coming

NetherRealm Studios Marketing Manager Brian Goodman told IGN that the company wasn’t prepared to go into details regarding microtransactions just yet, but that there would be a point later on when an announcement regarding microtransactions would be made.

This is just a sneaky way to avoid bad PR for the time being, until the team manages to reach a decision regarding how in-app purchases will be implemented.

In the past, Mortal Kombat games used the Krypt for this kind of things, where players could spend Koins they had earned through playing in order to unlock various things such as concept art, new costumes, or new fatalities.

Mortal Kombat X is set for release on April 14, 2015, headed to PC, the Xbox 360 and Xbox One home consoles from Microsoft, and the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 computer entertainment systems from Sony.
