It is not clear what genre the veteran team might take on

Mortal Kombat might be a big franchise, successfully resurrected during 2011 by developer Netherrealm and by publisher Warner Bros., but the people behind it have decided that it is time to take a break and work on another intellectual property in the near future.

Ed Boon, the leader of the development team at Netherrealm told Gamespot during an interview that, “I would be surprised if Warner Bros. and us never released another Mortal Kombat game again. We don’t have a title to announce, but if this last one sold over 3 million and counting, there’s a certain amount of assumption that we’d consider doing another Mortal Kombat game.”

He added, “But at the same time, we want our studio to do more than just make Mortal Kombat games. We love making them but we also want to do different types of games. Different genres, different IPs.”

The first sign of what the developers at Netherrealm might be interested in creating in the near future can be seen in Batman: Arkham City Lockdown, a video game launched for iOS-powered devices to accompany the bigger Arkham City release on home consoles and on the PC.

In December, Netherrealm stated that it would not be launching a Mortal Kombat title during 2012, but the company is currently working on a PlayStation Vita version of the 2011 title, which will probably be launched during spring both in North America and in Europe.

Warner Bros. has been quietly growing as a publisher for last few years and the company, by virtue of being a global media conglomerate, is well poised to take intellectual property from both the movie and the television space and turn them into video games.

Mortal Kombat will probably return in 2013 and another crossover game is a good bet for the next outing of the game.
