After the surprising success of the full-pledged Mortal Kombat reboot that appeared last month, Warner Bros. and NetherRealm have announced that a special downloadable collection of classic Mortal Kombat titles is set to be released this summer.

The Mortal Kombat franchise has been successfully restarted with the release of the new fighting game last month, bringing the famous franchise into the current generation and managing to sell quite a lot of units on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles.

Now, gamers will get a chance to enjoy the first three arcade Mortal Kombat games, thanks to a brand new trilogy.

The Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection includes Mortal Kombat 1 and 2, as well as Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and is being developed by Other Ocean, in partnership with NetherRealm.

“We are very excited to finally have the first three Mortal Kombat games available in one download package for long-time and new fans to play,” said Ed Boon, creative director, NetherRealm Studios.

“With the release of our 2011 Mortal Kombat, and its return to 2D game play, players have been asking for these classic titles and we are happy to deliver them.”

The three games will include all of their regular characters, fatalities and environments from the arcade games, but also brand new things like online multiplayer, leaderboards, achievements and trophies, depending on the console.

For players who really want to recreate the arcade experience, Warner Bros. and GameStop have partnered up and are offering a special Mortal Kombat Klassic Fight Stick controller, which comes bundled with a redeemable code for the Arcade Kollection for just $129.99.

The Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection will be released this summer as a digital download for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 platforms, costing just $9.99 or 800 MS Points, depending on your choice.
