Since launch, Google's Web Fonts repository has proven quite popular and more free and open fonts have been uploaded for anyone to use. At the same time, websites and Google itself are making use of the available fonts to spruce up web typography.

Now it's enabling Google Sites users to tap into the repository and add any of the over 100 fonts now available.

Granted, enabling regular users, meaning not web designers, to customize the websites they create with colorful fonts may be one step away from another Geocities, but since Sites is used mainly by small businesses, maybe this won't happen.

"Ever wanted to make your Google site feel even more unique? Today, we added a wide variety of Google Web Fonts to Google Sites, making it easier to style your website and make it look awesome," Robert Dionne, Software Engineer at Google, wrote.

"Now you can go to Manage Site under More Actions and choose Color and Fonts in the left-hand navigation to choose fonts for the entire site in one go," he announced.

Users can now customize the font used by any of the site's sections and they can choose different options for each. You can also change the size of the fonts by each section, along with the text, background color and so on.

"The web fonts feature lets you select different sections of the site such as the entire page or just the title to selectively choose your styling. Additionally, we've given you control over font sizes for many of these sections," Dionne explained.

Google launched its Web Fonts API at last year's Google I/O conference. Since then it's been adding more fonts to the repository and also expanding its use inside the company. Several months ago Google started using some web fonts inside Google Docs, enabling users to choose from a wider number of fonts for their documents.
