iLife and iWork

Obviously, Apple is in love with the letter "i", otherwise how could you explain they attached it to so many of their products? It all started with the iMac and that was soon followed by the iBook series.

Of course we can't get enough of iPod bestseller but there's a lot of i-something on the software side of the deal as well: the new kids on the "i-block" are the iLife '05 and the iWork '05 .

iPhoto 5 is part of Apple's new iLife '05, a suite which also includes iMovie (for video editing), GarageBand 2 (recording studio in a box), iDVD 5 (designing DVD menu screens and burning discs) and iTunes 4.7 (a music jukebox, which is still a free download). All these applications allow users to play with music, photography and movies as if they were real pros.

In iWork '05 the attractions are Pages, Apple's first new publishing program in years, and Keynotes 2, a presentation program. With this two programs we can create your rich media documents.

With iPhoto it is now much easier to sort and find your pictures: you can group albums in folders, assign keywords to pictures with a simple drag-and-drop step, and browse your entire collection in a calendar view.

Second, iPhoto 5 includes far more useful image editing tools. Instead of just applying automated fixes, you can correct a variety of flaws. These take away most of the reasons to use other picture editors.

If you buy a new Mac, iLife '05 comes free. Otherwise, it costs $79, $30 more than last year's version. For the same price you can choose the iWork '05 suite .
