Another one bites Ubuntu

Inspiron 1420 Notebook joins the four Ubuntu 7.04 systems offered by Dell Inc. I think many of you remember the catchy announcement made by Dell, saying they would start releasing desktop computers and notebook systems with pre-installed Linux as an option. The open source fans got so excited with the idea that they even set up online motions to convince Dell to start selling the systems outside the US too.

However, even though there will be quite a while until we find an Ubuntu Dell computer outside the States, as Dell officials claimed, the company considers another movement in order to please the expectations of their Linux-fan customers. Therefore they've added another system to the initial XPS 410n Desktop, Dimension E520n Desktop and Inspiron E1505n Notebook. And they are also replacing the Dimension E520 desktop with the new, low-priced Inspiron 530.

Inspiron 1420N is based on a 1.5GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T5250 processor, but if you're more serious about speed you can upgrade it to a 2.2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 with an 800MHz FSB and a 4MB cache. The initial chip-set comes with a 667MHz FSB and a 2MB cache.

The Jet Black would be the standard option for the 1420N but for an additional $29, one can choose from other designs such as: Midnight Blue, Ruby Red, Alpine White, Espresso Brown, Sunshine Yellow, Flamingo Pink or Spring Green. Like the rest of the Dell Ubuntu system family Inspiron 1420 Notebook also benefits from fully hardware support, including Dell's Complete Care Accidental Damage Service.

Highlights:

- 80GB SATA hard drive (spin rate of 5,400 rpm) - 24x CD burner/DVD combo drive / 8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write ability - anti-glare widescreen 14.1-inch display with 1,280x800 WXGA (Wide XGA) resolution - Intel Graphics Media Accelerator X3100 - four USB 2.0 ports - 1 IEEE 1394 FireWire port - integrated 8-in-1 media card reader

The Inspiron 1420 Notebooks will be available for delivery starting this mid-July and the pricing would start from $774.

Regarding the Dimension E520 system, this one has been replaced with the low-priced Desktop 530. The 530 comes in a mini-tower with ample bay and card room for users who want to add it to their PCs. The system is based on an Intel 1.6GHz E2140 Pentium dual-core processor with an 800MHz FSB and 1MB of L2 cache. However you can upgrade it to an Intel 1.8Ghz E4300 Core 2 Duo Processor with an 800MHz FSB and a 2MB L2 cache. Desktop 530 also comes with 10/100M-bps Ethernet and Bluetooth 2.0. The pricing starts from $449 and includes entire support options.
