A growing trend

Yesterday, Softpedia readers were upset to hear that a certain website was (and still is) collecting cash to go out, buy Apple portables and smash them to pieces, to please those who hate the "iPod Revolution." Sadly, more iProducts are being destroyed just for the sake of getting the process on tape. Sadly, again, we're talking about the new iPhone 3G.

The guys behind the latest iPhone 3G destroyed on purpose are WillItBlend.com. Without fail, they have blended dozens of devices using a household blender, taping the action and showing it in slo-mo for everyone to see how each part breaks and flies away from the device only to turn into dust or smoke minutes later.

"The story behind the Will-it-Blend campaign is in fact a clever marketing strategy for promoting and selling those super blenders by Blendtec," GSM Arena confirms. "Nonetheless it's so fun watching all those things go down the blender really fast - some even go ballistic," it is said on the website. "We enjoyed watching the first-gen iPhone getting all beat up and dusted. So we eagerly expected what will happen with the speedier iPhone 3G - will it go down twice as fast?"

According to the same source, to date, none of the gadgets that made it into the blender have managed to escape "the relentless blades."

OK, so while this initiative doesn't strike us as moral or well intended, it does raise the bar in terms of destroying devices for no good reason (except to make for a good laugh for those who don't know any better):

1 - Will It Blend is not raising cash to go out and buy devices to destroy - they use their own money for that. 2 - Will It Blend destroys just one unit of one device model (not like the people at SmashMyiPhone 3G, who will buy 100 phones and put them out of order, granted they are donated sufficient cash). 3 - the blending is actually quite spectacular, especially in slow motion.

But, if you think of the minds that came up with this incredible Apple device (and of the looks on their faces when they see this clip), the manufacturing costs, the capabilities of such a device in the hands of a hard-working person who really can't afford it, and other aspects, it really seems downright wrong to just blend the iPhone 3G.

So, are you getting any kicks out of watching this?
