MontaVista Software announced yesterday that its Carrier Grade Edition (CGE) 5.0 Linux distribution is compliant with the Linux Foundation's Carrier Grade Linux (CGL) 4.0 specification. It has also earned Linux Standard Base (LSB) 3.0 certification, and is Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) logo certified. At this moment, there are no other carrier grade Linux distributions that have all these three specifications.

Dan Cauchy, senior director of market development, carrier and mobile platforms, MontaVista Software said: "As the provider of the world's most widely-deployed carrier grade Linux, MontaVista is committed to supplying network equipment providers (NEPs) with the highest quality operating system. Our compliance and certification is another demonstration of our leadership in upholding the standards set by the Linux community by providing superior Linux solutions to our customers."

"The CGL specification is a set of standards designed to ensure a consistent Linux platform that meets the stringent demands of today's network equipment providers. MontaVista is an important contributing member of the Linux community, and with its LSB 3.0 certification and CGL 4.0 compliance, MontaVista has shown its commitment to upholding community standards," added Jim Zemlin, executive director of the Linux Foundation, the nonprofit organization dedicated to accelerating the growth and usage of Linux.

The "carrier grade" term is used for software and hardware that support public telecommunications and data communications networks. MontaVista Linux Carrier Grade Edition 5.0 is the most used carrier grade Linux solution in the world, with seven of the most important network equipment providers (NEPs), including Alcatel-Lucent, Motorola, NEC and others. If a company buys a Linux distribution registered with the CGL 4.0 specification, it receives all the features necessary by NEPs and telecom carriers. MontaVista CGE 5.0 met all of the 129 Priority 1 requirements of the Carrier Grade Workgroup of the Linux Foundation.
