Money may not guarantee happiness but, as a recent survey indicates, it can pave the way for a slimmer, healthier, ultimately with more self-esteem you. Weight loss bets are taking over offices worldwide, as more people are waging in on who loses more weight, and money has come to compensate for the lack of will or motivation in the fight against the pounds, as The New York Times reports.

Dieting can be one of the most frustrating experiences in one’s life if the motivation for it is just not there, nutritionists have often said. Other than requiring plenty of determination and a clear visualization of the purpose, it also needs some form of reward to make the entire experience more bearable. Money has come to be that reward, as more office workers are engaging in weight loss bets all over the world, as revealed by a recent survey.

According to the findings, the system works as with any other betting game, only that the odds are entirely up to the person who’s doing the betting. If a weight loss “campaign” starts and the bets are placed, the person who loses the least weight is also the one who has to pay the others. Since no one likes to part with their hard-earned money, the motivation is twice as strong (and the results double as visible) than when money is not involved in the dieting equation.

If no bets on losing weight are being placed in your office, don’t worry. According to the aforementioned publications, there is also the option of specialized websites to aid you if you lack the motivation for dieting. Sites such as StickK charge users a certain amount of money if they fail to meet self-imposed goals in terms of dieting. With this particular website, the money raised goes to various charitable organizations, so, even if users fail to stick to their diets, they’re still doing a good deed.

However, nutritionists share, money does not always have to be the answer, even if it makes for a very powerful incentive. For instance, if betting is not your thing, you can always engage in a friendly competition with one of the girls (or guys, depending on the case) to see who loses the more weight in a healthy way. The reward, though, must be something else than food, nutritionists also add.
