Nintendo has already clarified that Shigeru Miyamoto will not resign his current position inside the company, supervising all its big franchises, but the legendary creator of Mario and Zelda confirmed the kind of future games he will be working on.

Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle Shigeru Miyamoto addressed recent talk about his future at Nintendo by saying, “Nothing has changed, and nothing will be changed in the near future as to my role inside of the company.”

He says that while not actually resigning his position he is interested in getting a more hands-on experience with some interesting projects, although he was not ready to offer any more information.

Miyamoto added, “Until the time that we are ready to commercialise, it’s not something we can disclose. “What we really have to do is try to be different. We are trying to create something that can never be reproduced on the smart phone.”

The statement might mean that Miyamoto has been given the task of working with the Nintendo 3DS video game development team, creating smaller and more innovative game experiences that can sustain the momentum that the handheld has managed to get with the launch of Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.

One of the unique selling propositions behind the launch of the 3DS has been that it offers dedicated gamers a number of capabilities, including the three dimensional gaming, that smartphones, be they Apple made or Android powered, cannot deliver.

Miyamoto has not said when his new line of small games might be launched and it is not clear whether he will use established game worlds or create entirely new universes.

The 3DS has managed to overtake the original device in the hardware series in terms of sales in the United States for its first year and a strong performance is also expected for the Christmas period.
