Donald Trump and NBC have unveiled the new Miss Universe, for the year of 2010: against all odds, Jimena Navarrete, Miss Mexico, was crowned with the much coveted tiara.

Navarrete was not among the favorite to win, yet she was the one to walk away with the ultimate title of the most beautiful and accomplished woman in the world, as Examiner informs.

She’s been working as a model for most of her life, yet it was her answer regarding children’s use of the Internet in the final round that won Navarrete major points with the judges.

The beauty drew a question from the bowl, just like her rival, Miss Jamaica Yendi Phillipps, also did before her. She had to express her feelings on children spending time online unsupervised.

Miss Mexico said that, while the Internet was indispensable, it was up to the parents to watch over their children and how much time they spent online.

“I do believe that Internet is an indispensable, necessary tool for the present time. We must be sure to teach them the values that we learned as a family,” she explained.

Her answer, together with her impeccable style and grace, as proved in previous rounds (including the evening gown and a stunning two-piece bathing suit), won over the judges and got her the big prize.

This includes a luxury apartment in NYC, a scholarship to the New York Film Academy (including housing), clothes, shoes, jewelry and accessories, and, of course, money.

It is believed Navarrete will spend her reigning year campaigning to raise awareness on HIV/AIDS and breast cancer, though that is pending confirmation. After she’s done as Miss Universe, she may pursue a career in acting or television.

Though a large part of the audience applauded Navarrete’s win, this year’s edition of the beauty pageant was again targeted by critics who, once more, underline that it’s nothing more than a dog show… for humans.

There is no real substance to the pageant, The Screen Fiend, for one, says. It’s looking for an “empty vessel with a pretty face” and that’s precisely what it achieves, but that’s not to say it’s not sad or at least very awkward to watch.

“Let’s be honest about Miss Universe 2010 – an annual pageant that features a bunch of overgrown little girls likely suffering from arrested development caused by overbearing parents or a longstanding desire to feel loved, appreciated, accepted, or all of the above. Sure, these women seem to have a nice heart, a kind face, and the ability to look good in a swimsuit, but let’s be real – the Miss Universe Pageant is nothing more than a Westminster Dog Show for human beings,” the e-zine says.

“And at the end of the day, that’s what we want from our Miss Universe winner – an empty vessel with a pretty face. It may be a train wreck, but it’s certainly a beautiful disaster,” the publication concludes by saying.
