The new Mirror's Edge game that reboots the series wants to take what worked in the original game, improve upon it, and fix the different issues that kept the first title from truly becoming a phenomenon, at least according to developer DICE.

Mirror's Edge surprised a lot of people back in 2009 when it was released for PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, but, despite this, it was a new intellectual property and didn't really impress in terms of critical or commercial reception.

Over the years, however, things changed, and the game became a favorite. According to DICE's Patrick Soderlund, sales also picked up, as the original Mirror's Edge went on to sell over 2.5 million copies.

Now, the studio is working on another game in the series, a reboot that's simply titled Mirror's Edge, not the oft-rumored Mirror's Edge 2.

The game will be an improvement over the rough original, according to Soderlund, who emphasizes that it can only work properly on next-gen consoles like the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

"It's a game that DICE wanted to build," the executive said about the new title to CVG. "They think that the first one was a great first attempt but it didn't really deliver on the true vision that the guys had for that IP."

What's more, Soderlund notes that there was an immediate approval from EA, as the publisher is confident in the property.

"The support inside the whole company on Mirror's Edge has been tremendous. We sold about 2.5 million units with Mirror's Edge and people haven't even blinked at it – like, 'of course we're going to make a new Mirror's Edge.' The whole company has been behind it."

In terms of actual gameplay, DICE is still playing coy and won't reveal any concrete details.

"What I can say is we're taking more of an action adventure approach on it than maybe before. First-person, running predominantly... This will be more of an action adventure game, but true to what the first one was to a large extent."

The new Mirror's Edge is still early in development and will appear "when it's ready," according to DICE.
