DICE confirms that it's upcoming Mirror's Edge project isn't a reboot nor is it a sequel to the original game released many years ago. As such, it now has a fresh name to distinguish it from the rest, in the form of Mirror's Edge Catalyst.

Mirror's Edge was an ambitious all-new intellectual property released by DICE and Electronic Arts back in 2008 across multiple platforms. The fact that it featured first-person parkour mechanics, as well as a less violent take that didn't rely on shooting guns, made it a fan favorite.

Unfortunately, sales didn't exactly impress, so EA tasked DICE with focusing on its more profitable Battlefield series. A new title in the franchise was revealed back in 2013, and last year some early concept footage was presented to the world, alongside a confirmation that it reimagines the series, sort of like a reboot.

The new Mirror's Edge is called Catalyst and isn't a reboot

Now, as part of a new entry on the official website, DICE Senior Producer Sara Jansson confirms that the new project isn't a sequel, nor is it a reboot. As such, the team has decided to create a new name, in the form of Mirror's Edge Catalyst.

Besides the new identity, DICE promises a more impressive parkour system, a richer story, and a lot of new mechanics to impress veterans and newcomers.

"The team has spent a lot of time re-evaluating every aspect of the game and making it a new experience. This is not a sequel, this is not Mirror's Edge 2. We have landed on a vision that honors the first game - pushing the boundaries of first person movement and diving deeper into the story behind our heroine Faith - but also brings a lot of great new, interesting gameplay and features to the experience for our players," Jansson explains.

The first glimpse at Mirror's Edge Catalyst will be available at EA's own E3 2015 press event on June 15. Until then, there's a new bit of artwork available above.
