The Xbox 360 edition of Minecraft has broken through another record, selling over 12 million copies worldwide ever since its release two years ago and developer Mojang has once again pledged that the Xbox One edition is coming eventually.

Minecraft first appeared as an alpha project on the PC and quickly amazed many different games around the world with its emphasis on randomness and the ability to create all sorts of crazy things using your own resources.

Since then, developer Mojang has partnered with other teams, like 4J Studios, which brought Minecraft to new platforms, starting with the Xbox 360 two years ago.

Now, after a thrilling ride, Microsoft has confirmed that Minecraft on Xbox 360 has broken another record, reaching 12 million units sold worldwide both via the Xbox Live Arcade but also through retail stores, as the title got released on a disc shortly after it became really popular.

"I remember when we started talking about sales numbers that we would be super happy to sell 1 million copies. That would have put us on par with BF1943 and Castle Crashers, which both are awesome games, so that was something to aim for. We never even dreamed of selling 12 million," Mojang's David Kaplan tells Xbox Wire about the new feat.

According to the developer, fans on Xbox 360 can look forward to more mashup DLC packs, as the new Marvel collaboration is just the tip of an ongoing initiative with other developers and companies.

Kaplan emphasizes that he is constantly amazed by the creations of Xbox 360 owners, especially since they can't use external programs like on the PC to simplify the building process.

"The continued support and the fact that people are still able to surprise us with innovative creations. Considering you can’t "cheat" by building stuff with external tools, the community have created incredible things."

The Mojang employee also reveals that, while the team would love to allow bigger worlds in Minecraft on the Xbox 360, the fact that not all consoles have a hard drive prevents such an upgrade.

"We're pushing the limitations of the 360 in various different ways and we will continue doing that. However, bigger worlds would require the guarantee of a hard drive on each 360; since not all 360's ship with hard drives that makes things tricky. Luckily, on Xbox One, that's not an issue."

Last but not least, he also discloses that the Xbox One edition of Minecraft will appear "eventually," but that no other details can be shared right now.
