Independent game phenomenon Minecraft has just reached the 2.5 million units sold milestone, and, according to its main developer, Markus 'Notch' Persson, is getting ready for a brand new update, taking it to version 1.7.

Minecraft has quickly become a cult hit on the PC digital market, as the world building simulator managed to amaze millions of gamers even before it entered an official beta stage.

Now, just as the game is getting ready to debut on the Xbox 360 console and on the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play mobile phone, its main developer, Markus Persson, the leader of Mojang, has confirmed that the PC version of the game has reached 2.5 million downloads.

According to the official statistics on the Minecraft page, "9,261,439 people have registered" for Minecraft while "2,509,170 people bought the game."

Minecraft was estimated to have made around $33 million earlier this year, right when the game entered a beta stage, after being stuck in alpha for quite some time, during which it became extremely popular.

Now, with the full version of Minecraft being set for release on November 11, this year, Persson also confirmed that a fresh update will appear, taking it to version 1.7, and will include plenty of brand new things that reward imaginative players.

"We are working on Minecraft Beta 1.7, which I’m referring to as the “adventure update”. We’re keeping the details secret so people can get surprises. The idea with this update is to flesh out the game a bit, making it reward exploration and combat more. Assuming we like them in play testing, pistons are coming in 1.7."

Minecraft amazed millions of PC users, earned dozens of accolades and became a cult hit through its pixelated graphics yet additive gameplay that lets you gather materials and build anything you want, alongside others, in a virtual world.
