After climbing up and down the ranks of Apple’s Paid Apps chart for months, Mojang’s immensely popular Minecraft – Pocket Edition is attempting to retake the crown, and has managed to pull back up to 3rd place after a long period of absence from the top.

Minecraft – Pocket Edition has been available on Apple’s App Store for iPhone and iPad since 2011 and, while the game has had its ups and downs, its ratings have always been up.

Until recently, when a few nasty bugs poked their head out forcing Mojang to release some updates sooner rather than later.

It also hasn’t helped that other contenders made their appearance in the interim, such as Temple Run 2, and Sonic Dash.

Most recently, WhatsApp Messenger has been buzzing around the Paid Apps dome, and is still at it. But after plummeting to the sixth, and even the seventh position, Minecraft is making a fast comeback.

The reason is unclear, but it might have something to do with the fact that Mojang rolled out a recent update on desktop platforms, potentially raising new awareness about the title. Whatever it was, we’re glad to see such a fine IP retake its rightful place among Apple’s App Store.

Fans of the game continue to post “reviews” on iTunes asking for new features, but also bug fixes. One of the most common complaints is that the desktop version doesn’t have all the oomph found in the Pocket Edition. Ironic, to say the least.

Mojang undoubtedly has a new update in store for its fan base, so expect Minecraft – Pocket Edition to retake the iTunes crown soon enough.

For those who haven’t yet played the game, you’ll need an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad running iOS 4.3 or later. A Lite (free) version is available, while the full game sells for $6.99 / €5,99.
