Video game developer Mojang, through the voice of Founder Markus Persson, and the media conglomerate Warner Bros. announce that they are working together on a new movie based on the indie hit title Minecraft.

A number of sources in the film industry were eager to leak information about the project, but Notch himself beat them all to the punch by posting a message on his official Twitter feed.

It states, “Someone is trying leak the fact that we're working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie. I wanted to be the leak!”

The video game developer then added, “It's for real. I think every part of that tweet was real, including me wanting to be the one to spill the news about a potential movie.”

Warner Bros. acquired the rights to Minecraft in movie form from Mojang and the resulting product will apparently use live action techniques.

Roy Lee and Jill Messick are listed as producers at the moment and their pair is best known for the work they have done on the recent LEGO Movie that, despite low expectations, managed to become one of the most successful launches for the 2014.

Warner Bros. has made no official comment on the reveal and at the moment, no information is offered on the potential plot of the Minecraft movie, the cast that could be involved or the director that’s willing to take on such a project.

Considering that the rights have just been acquired, it might be two or three years before the film is actually released to audiences.

Minecraft is a hit title on both the Xbox 360 home console from Microsoft and on the PC, with plenty of gamers ready to spend hours in its blocky world, simply building elaborate structures or testing the limits of its mechanics.

It’s unclear whether they are interested in watching a live action movie based on that universe.

Notch has recently revealed that more than 100 million people have played the PC version of Minecraft and that 14 million of those have actually paid for it.

The title will also be launched this year on the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft.

Development on Minecraft is still ongoing and Mojang continues to deliver gameplay fixes, new mechanics and more items for gamers to use.

On the Microsoft home console, gamers can also get content packs based on high-profile properties like The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim.
