Minecraft, the version launched on the Xbox 360 home console, is once more the leader of the United Kingdom video game based chart, managing to once again head off a determined challenge from both more modern and more classic releases.

The indie title, which is constantly getting updates from developer Mojang, is probably enjoying its final days in the lead, according to data compiled by UKIE, as a number of big releases, including Saints Row 4 and a new Splinter Cell, get ready to deploy.

Minecraft shows that indie developers can create huge hits that capture big audiences on home consoles as well as on the PC.

Second place went to another veteran, FIFA 13 from EA Sports, which continues to be a contender a little over one month before the launch of the next installment in the series, which is set to introduce more options linked to physics and team play.

The Smurfs 2, a movie tie-in from Ubisoft, has managed to gain two positions coming from the fifth spot in order to capture the final position on the podium.

The first new entry of the week is Tales of Xillia from Namco Bandai Games, which has reached fourth place during its first week on sale.

Animal Crossing: New Leaf from Nintendo has lost two places for the week ending on August 12 to reach fifth place and The Last of Us has dropped four in order to come in at number six.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, the shooter developed by Treyarch and published by Activision, is up one position in seventh, trading places with LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, a game distributed by Warner Bros.

Tomb Raider, the new Lara Croft adventure from Crystal Dynamics, remains stuck to ninth place and Assassin’s Creed III closes down the United Kingdom top ten.
