Hit PC independent title Minecraft is getting close to reaching the 1 million units sold milestone, according to its lead developer, Markus "Notch" Persson.

Minecraft was released into alpha stage around the middle of the last year, and quickly captured a cult following thanks to its simple mechanics and due to the many ways people can express themselves in the virtual world of this multiplayer title.

After hitting the half-million mark around October of last year, Notch has now revealed that Minecraft is getting close to selling 1 million copies around the world.

That's quite impressive, especially since the game is barely in beta stage and is available only as a digital download.

"Minecraft will hit 1 million sales soon, and I have NO idea how to celebrate that! There's no time to plan anything," said Notch.

The indie developer confirmed that he and his team were working round the clock to add a bunch of new features in a future update.

"[We] have added a bunch of new content to Minecraft that we want to get out asap, so there will be a content patch update next week with a whole pile of fun new toys, including a water mob and quite possibly paint if we can figure out how exactly it should work."

This isn't the first big Minecraft-related news of the week, as the title was also nominated for three categories at the Independent Games Festival, specifically the Grand Prize, the Technical Excellence and the Excellence in Design one.

Minecraft is a PC exclusive indie title, which lets players loose in a virtual world where they can collect basic elements and objects, in order to use them to create everything they want, from statues, to tunnels, bridges or tributes to other video games.

The game is still available just as a digital download from its official website.
