14 DAY TRIAL // Optical illusions are fascinating phenomena, but these animated GIFs are much more impressive, as they basically manage to hypnotize you and take you into another dimension.
These hypnotic works of art are based on average shapes that are skilfully transformed into dizzying colorful structures. They are similar to visual illusions but have a greater vertigo effect.
This series of original animated GIFs has been created by Hungarian/German graphic designer David Szakaly, known on the web as Davidope. He started posting his creations on Tumblr in 2008 and they quickly became very popular.
The talented animator uses twisting forms, flashes of black and white, and multicolor shapes to create mesmerizing structures that pulse or twist and trick your brain. His choice of high-contrast patterns make space and motion direction easier to perceive.
His quirky GIFs have become so wildly popular that Szakaly has even started to make animations for clients from all over the world.
In a 2012 interview with Societe Perrier, the artist said that his art was also a form of psychological exploration.
“I'm interested in psychology in general. Psychedelia is often associated with drugs, but psychedelic states may be elicited by various techniques, such as meditation or sensory stimulation,” he said.
