Plus open-source interface

"Mimique" is the name of a recently unveiled mobile phone concept that should be a response to the all-serious PDA-like devices that conquered the market in the last years.

Viewed from the back, the Mimique looks like a toy with an external antenna and rounded edges. Viewed from the front, the handset still looks like a toy, but an advanced one. More exactly, RKS Desing, the creators of Mimique, are proposing a touchscreen display for the phone and also a full-touch user interface.

The Mimique should run on a "new open-source" mobile operating system, offering users the freedom to customize its interface and applications however they want. The handset also features lots of graphic skins that can be easily changed as to match basically any mood a user might have. Furthermore, "downloadable upgrades" will allow you to keep up with the latest software innovations without having to acquire a new phone.

The open-source OS that RKS is talking about sounds a bit like Google's upcoming Andorid platform, so we might get to have, sometime in the future, the first "childish Android phone". Sure, the Mimique is only a concept, but many real mobile phones were only concepts at the beginning.

Besides the touchscreen display and the open-source interface, the rest of the features that should be included in the Mimique phone are not known. However, with an intuitive user interface and a range of mid to high-end features (3G connectivity, Wi-Fi, a good camera etc), this handset could really be a success, especially if it comes with a decent price tag.

In the end, even if it's not real for the moment, Mimique is a quite interesting "old-school meets touchscreen" handset that would be fun to have. Maybe in a couple of years we'll even get the chance to buy one.
