The singer is oblivious to regional geography and political struggles in Spain

A rule of thumb for all performing artists who do a lot of traveling is to try and avoid controversy wherever they go. Some find it easier than others by trying to stay up to date with current events, political, social and economical, but Miley seems to fail in all those subjects.

The singer made a major faux pas during her recent concert in Spain, when she accidentally waved the wrong flag on stage, as the Independent newspaper reports. Just to get the geography straight, keep in mind that Catalonia is an important region in Spain, where the city of Barcelona is located and where most of the people want to become independent from the parent-country.

This region shouldn't be confused with another independence-seeking part of Spain – the Basque Country. But that's exactly what Miley did when she waved the red, green and white ikurrina flag in Barcelona, which is the symbol used by the Basques.

Chances are that you'll never see this flag being flown in Catalonia, but Miley didn't seem to make the distinction and paraded it on stage like it was no big thing. Some of the fans who picked up on this must have felt disrespected, as Catalonians are known to be proud and fiercely protective of their legacy.

So far, Cyrus has managed to avoid the storm that usually comes with such a gaffe. On her social media accounts, the singer feigned ignorance of the matter as she casually requested fans to nominate her in the upcoming Video Music Awards hosted yearly by MTV.

Last year's VMAs marked Miley's famous transition to the twerking princess that she has become today, when she danced provocatively in the lap of Robin Thicke to the tune of his hit song “Blurred Lines.” It makes you wonder what she'll come up with this year to outdo herself.

The recent flag snafu isn't by far the only controversy Miley has stirred in her concerts. When she performed in Milan, Italy, she brought a cardboard cutout of Selena Gomez on stage as she sang her new hit “FU,” an acronym which shouldn't be that difficult to decipher.

Basically, it was a major diss directed at the Disney singer, and it's rumored to have been caused by a long-running feud between the two, that goes back to 2007. A source revealed that, “Their issue dates back to their Disney days... Things turned sour after Miley broke up with Nick Jonas in late 2007. The following year, Nick began seeing Selena and that is when the beef blew up.”

Nobody keeps a grudge like a pair of young famous pop singers.
