14 DAY TRIAL // Soon enough, fashion commentators will be left without something to comment on if this trend that Miley Cyrus seems to favor, sartorially speaking, is picking up. The other night, the pop star hit up a club in New York in nothing but pasties on her breasts and a pair of black glittery pants.
That’s right: the former Hannah Montana star went out and about town in a pair of tight black pants and a pair of pasties shaped like ice cream cones to protect her modesty. She also had glitter sprayed on the upper part of her body, but that did nothing to distract from the fact that she’d gone out of the house topless.
The Daily Mail has photos of her scandalous getup. The scene of the crime (fashion crime, that is) was the Alexander Wang afterparty for the New York Fashion Week show, attended by the who’s who in young showbiz, including Kendall and Kylie Jenner, Hailey Baldwin, and Gigi Hadid.
The tab also has pics that confirm this wasn’t how Miley planned to head out to party, because she left the house with a geometric print top that was slightly see-through, hence the need for pasties. On the ride from home to the venue, she seemed to have decided that the pasties were enough for a “top.”
Miley’s been pushing the fashion envelope for months
Miley is doing a pretty good job at shedding her Disney image, but in the process, she’s also earning a reputation of one of the worst dressers around. Rihanna takes similar fashion risks, but with her, they pay off, because Rihanna is better at playing the fashion game than Miley.
The latter is all about daring people into saying something negative about her, about the shock factor. Since she started on this “journey” that would ultimately dissociate her completely from Hannah Montana, Miley has been wearing the most ridiculous, the most revealing, and oftentimes the most impractical outfits imaginable.
She says she’s claiming the right to dress as she sees fit and that she’s defying haters by being “punk” enough to do just that. Fashion commentators are saying she’s just experimenting, but that the results of most of her experiments are just catastrophic because she doesn’t have an eye for fashion.
What if celebrities start to leave their clothes at home from now on?
This will probably not happen very soon, but then again, didn’t we say the same when the underwear as outerwear became a thing? Today, you don’t see a single red carpet without at least a couple of outfits that include either a sheer skirt plus grandma’s pants combo, or grandma’s pants as shorts.
If this shirtless trend also picks up, the fashion industry will probably go into shock.
The one good thing about this is that it’s refreshing to see a young woman as confident as Miley is go out dressed like this. In an age where body image is taking a huge hit because of the heavily retouched representations of beauty in the media, Miley is loving her body – enough to show it to the world.
