Mike Huckabee says he didn’t “slam” or “attack” Natalie Portman with out of wedlock pregnancy comments
Mike Huckabee says he didn’t “slam” or “attack” Natalie Portman with out of wedlock pregnancy comments

After getting a lot of flak for name-dropping Natalie Portman for getting pregnant before getting married, former Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee is clearing some things up: he did not mean to attack the Oscar-winning actress.

As we also informed you the other week, Huckabee said that Portman was setting a very bad example to all women in the US, telling them that being a single mother was something to be desired.

She was, in this way, glamorizing out of wedlock pregnancy, Huckabee said, completely ignoring the fact that Portman was engaged to be married to the father of her unborn child, ballet dancer Benjamin Millepied.

Having learned that in the meantime, Huckabee addresses the topic once more on his blog, apologizing (of sorts) for name-dropping Portman.

“I was asked about Oscar winner Natalie Portman’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy. Natalie is an extraordinary actor, very deserving of her recent Oscar and I am glad she will marry her baby’s father,” Huckabee says.

“However, contrary to what the Hollywood media reported, I did not ‘slam’ or ‘attack’ Natalie Portman, nor did I criticize the hardworking single mothers in our country,” he adds.

He then proceeds to clarify his previous statement by repeating it almost word for word.

“My comments were about the statistical reality that most single moms are very poor, under-educated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death,” Huckabee says.

“That’s the story that we’re not seeing, and it’s unfortunate that society often glorifies and glamorizes the idea of having children out of wedlock,” he adds.

It’s basically the same thing he said first about Portman, just that, this time, he’s left her name out of it.

The actress, on the other hand, has not deigned to address Huckabee’s open criticism (even if unfounded) of her lifestyle. Knowing how much she likes to lead her life out of the spotlight, chances are she never will.
