Shinji Mikami, one of the creators of the survival horror genre, believes that the extra computing power of the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the Xbox One from Microsoft will allow his team to create a more interesting atmosphere for their upcoming The Evil Within.

In an interview translated by Siliconera, the developer states, “The PlayStation 4’s resolution is very high, so the picture is gorgeous. In regards to lighting, the parts that were rather sketchy in the past, can now be done with much more detail, which I believe is a big part of the evolution.”

At the same time, Mikami believes that companies need to create the engines and the tools required to actually use the extra computing power.

The Evil Within will use id Tech 5, which was created by id Software and was not widely used for current-generation games.

The Tango Gameworks team that Mikami is working with plans to make a lot of modifications to the technology in order to render it suitable for the survival horror genre.

The developer adds, “The PlayStation 4’s new specs , such as the ‘detailed expressions,’ are a crucial part in creating an atmosphere. We’re doing our best in those regards, along with its overwhelming realism, so please look forward to it.”

When The Evil Within was announced, publisher Bethesda said that it would revolutionize the survival horror space and would draw back gamers that might have become disappointed with the current state of Resident Evil.

The game will focus on a detective who is exploring an asylum that’s affected by a number of supernatural phenomena and players will have to deal with a range of powerful creatures, while also trying to discern between what is real and what is not.

The Evil Within is launching on the PC, the PlayStation 3, the PS4, Xbox 360 and the Xbox One in 2014.
