Warner Bros. and Monolith Entertainment have just revealed Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, a brand new game set in the Lord of the Rings universe that acts as a standalone experience set between The Hobbit and the LotR movies.

Lord of the Rings games have delivered some hit and miss experiences in recent years, as they ranged from surprisingly decent ones, like Guardians of Middle-earth, to promising but not that impressive ones, like War in the North.

Now, Warner Bros. has tasked Monolith, the studio behind Guardians of Middle-earth and Gotham City Imposters, with making a brand new experience in the LotR universe called Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

The new title features its own story that focuses on Talion, a ranger who witnesses the slaughter of his family the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor.

Talion is killed but he returns as a resurrected spirit of vengeance, complete with Wraith abilities, and he goes to Mordor in order to exact his revenge.

"In Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, players explore an original story of vengeance and redemption as they take control of Talion, a ranger whose family is murdered at the hands of Sauron and his army the night they return to Mordor," Warner Bros. said as part of a statement.

Among the main features of the game is a special system called Nemesis, which tracks interactions between players and various NPCs.

"Developed for next-gen consoles, Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor introduces the Nemesis System, a powerful and dynamic gameplay mechanic that allows players' actions to shape enemy relationships and characteristics to create personal and unique story and gameplay arcs that are persistent even after death. Players experience a unique game every time as the dynamic world reacts and adapts to their choices."

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is coming to PC, PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, and Xbox One. No exact release date or period was given. The first official image appears on the Game Informer cover this month.
