Microsoft has been long rumored to plan killing off the Zune software and replacing it with a new application, and some more info on the matter is now available.

What appears to be the Windows 8 companion app for Windows Phone 8 devices has made an appearance online today, courtesy of The Verge.

Just as expected, the application is meant to provide users with the possibility to easily sync files between their PCs and Windows Phone 8 devices.

It will have access to photos, documents, music, and videos on user’s Windows Phone handsets, for fast import or export of data to the computer and back.

The software has been designed in line with the new Windows 8 interface, formally referred to as Metro, and provides users with an experience in line with all other apps build based on the same principles.

Reportedly, the app will become available for download through the Windows Store and will completely replace the Zune app.

In fact, Microsoft is also expected to completely remove Zune from its list of products with the launch of Xbox Music, and it does not come as a surprise that the Zune desktop app will also be discontinued.

For Windows Phone 8 users, getting the app from the Windows Store will be more than easy. In fact, rumor has it that the software will be installed automatically as soon as the handset has been connected to the PC.

For Windows Phone users who will stick to Windows 7, Microsoft will have an equivalent app available for download as well, running in the good old desktop mode they grew fond of.

Microsoft is expected to brand the software a “companion app”, yet specific info on the matter is yet to emerge.

Apparently, the app will become available for download as soon as Windows Phone 8 is officially released, a move expected to occur sometime in late October.
