Microsoft’s Surface team said a few days ago in an IAmA session on Reddit that the company’s new tablet comes with a screen that’s much better than the one available on its fiercest rival, the iPad.

It was all determined with the help of a side by side comparison, but a display expert says that Microsoft’s statements aren’t exactly true.

In fact, the iPad clearly outruns the Surface when it comes to the built-in displays, Raymond Soneira, president of DisplayMate Technologies, revealed according to AppleInsider.

Soneira tested three different devices, namely the new iPad, the Surface tablet and an Asus Netbook to determine which one boasts a sharper display.

“All 3 displays have the same 5.9 inch screen height in Landscape mode, so it was an excellent and very fair comparison … The Windows ClearType 768p display on the Asus Netbook was significantly sharper than the iPad 2 768p display but also significantly less sharp than the new iPad 3 1536p display,” he said.

“It is certainly possible that the Microsoft Surface RT Tablet will perform better than the Asus Netbook, but it is very unlikely that it will turn out to be visually sharper than the new iPad 3.”

Microsoft, on the other hand, brags about its Surface tablet and the available display, saying that its larger screen with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels is much more advanced. A surface Pro with a 208ppi (1920x1080 px) is also slated to arrive in the upcoming months.

“Doing a side by side with the new iPad in a consistently lit room, we have had many people see more detail on Surface RT than on the iPad with more resolution,” the Surface team said.
