Microsoft is gearing up for the release of a new major version of their flagship application virtualization product, Application Virtualization 5.0 (App-V 5.0).

Today, the software giant is offering a beta flavor of the software for the general public, so that IT professionals could make an idea of the manner in which it can allow them to easily deliver virtually any application, anywhere.

At the same time, Microsoft claims that the new App-V 5.0 is capable of offering a more flexible, integrated and powerful experience across virtualized applications.

“Business users need and want their applications to be available from anywhere and delivered to them quickly, regardless of the device they are using,” Microsoft’s Karri Alexion-Tiernan notes in a recent blog post.

“To provide users the flexibility they desire and IT departments the efficiency they require, today we announce substantial updates to App-V with the beta of App-V 5.0.”

App-V 5.0 was designed to make virtualized apps work more like traditional software, while also leveraging Windows standards to deliver a consistent experience to users.

IT professionals will benefit from the option to offer isolation from other apps, as well as from reduced regression testing times, and increased flexibility when it comes to providing full interaction to apps that need a high level of communication.

“App-V 5.0 is designed to be easy and efficient to use in VDI environments, allowing IT to make the best use of expensive disk resources without changing the way they get their jobs done,” the said blog post continues.

Through App-V 5.0, software can be managed centrally, while being streamed to users on-demand. Applications can be stored locally for off-line access, but ITs can also choose to disable the feature.

“Also new in App-V 5.0 is the web-based management interface based on Silverlight. This allows IT to deploy, track and service virtual applications without being tied to an installed management console,” Karri Alexion-Tiernan continues.

The new Microsoft product arrives with support for Windows 7 and Windows 8 and offers seamless streaming of apps, Windows to Go integration and AppLocker for increased protection.

Also today, Microsoft made available for download its new User Experience Virtualization (UE-V) in public beta.
