We kind of expected this to happen, so Nokia’s announcement does not come as a surprise anymore. It appears that the first Windows Phone 8 devices will be announced in early September.

Shortly after Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop let slip that the launch of the first Windows Phone 8 smartphone is closer than we might think, the Finnish company came forward with an official announcement that will take place in New York City.

Microsoft and Nokia press conference is set to kick-off on September 5 at 9:30 AM and all the media is invited. Although there are no additional details on the event, everyone expects the Finnish handset maker to launch its first Windows Phone 8 device.

While there are no confirmation on the upcoming Windows Phone 8 device’s specs sheet, rumor has it that the smartphone will be powered by a dual core processor clocked at 1.5 GHz.

We reported last week on the Nokia Phi, allegedly the first smartphone announced by Nokia to be powered by Windows Phone 8 platform.

However, Nokia Phi is just a codename and the phone will be launched under a different name. The handset will be launched in North America, which means it will offer full LTE support.

According to the latest hearsay, the first Windows Phone 8 smartphone will follow the same design line as the Lumia 800 and 900 devices.

We also know it will come with microSD card slot for memory expansion and NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. The smartphone will sport a slightly larger display in comparison with Lumia 800, but we’re not sure if it will be on par with Lumia 900’s 4.3-inch.

Although Nokia and Microsoft will announce the first Windows Phone 8 devices on September 5, the smartphones are expected to hit shelves in early October.
