As a solution to piracy

Aside from imposing its DRM solution as the most efficient weapon against piracy which sucks the life (money) out of the movie studios' budgets, Microsoft has come up with a new solution.

The Redmond company, which has spent an impressive $7 billion budget to fight piracy, has come up with the idea of introducing disposable DVDs, The Business Online informs.

The DVD players will be able to play these discs only once, and after that the user can throw them away because he/she won't have access to the content anymore.

Such DVDs will cost approximately $5, unlike a regular one, whose price ranges from $19 to $26.

These discs, which could represent an alternative to DVD renting, are due for launch at the beginning of 2006 under the name "One Play Only" or "Play-Once".

The only obstacle Microsoft has to face is that only compatible DVD players will be able to read the discs. This means that the producers will have to be convinced first to introduce the DRM system proposed by Microsoft.
