Customers running Microsoft’s data platform both in the Cloud and on-premise are now able to apply updates from the Redmond company. The software giant has refreshed both SQL Azure, Azure Services Platform’s cloud computing database services, and SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM the offering designed for customers to deploy on servers running in their organizations.

As of the end of the past week, customers worldwide are able to take advantage of the enhancements delivered through Service Update 5 for SQL Azure.

Live in all datacenters around the globe as of October 22nd, 2010, the update is focused on getting the platform ready for its future evolution.

“This release primarily focused on delivering internal operational improvements to enable future feature additions,” revealed Steve Yi, a director of product management for SQL Azure.

“As part of this update, SQL Azure now provides support for the sp_tableoption system stored procedure. For more information, see sp_tableoption (SQL Azure Database).”

And just a few days ahead of the October 2010 refresh to SQL Azure, Microsoft pushed a new cumulative update package for SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM.

Cumulative Update #4 for SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM has been available to customers for an entire week now.

“This package contains all of the SQL Server 2008 R2 hotfixes that have been released since the initial release of SQL Server 2008 R2 RTM. CU#4 KB Article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2345451. Service Update 5 for SQL Azure was used by Microsoft to deliver not only the improvements mentioned above, but also to refresh the MSDN documentation available to customers and developers.

•Error Messages: The Error Messages (SQL Azure Database) topic now provides information on how to decode the throttling errors. For more information, see Reason Codes.

•Microsoft Sync Framework 2.1: The Migrating Databases to SQL Azure topic now describes the support for Microsoft Sync Framework 2.1,” Yi added.
