As the Redmond Company announced in June 2006 that it was going to scrap the "Save As PDF" and "Save As XPS" capabilities from the Office 2007 applications' menus, Microsoft also promised that it will make available a free update enabling the features. In this context, the US software giant quietly released the 2007 Microsoft Office Add-in: Microsoft Save as PDF or XPS. "This download allows you to export and save to the PDF and XPS formats in eight 2007 Microsoft Office programs. It also allows you to send as e-mail attachment in the PDF and XPS formats in a subset of these programs," explained Microsoft.

Supported by Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Service Pack 2, Microsoft has designed the add-in to deliver compatibility with Office Access 2007, Office Excel 2007, Office InfoPath 2007, Office OneNote 2007, Office PowerPoint 2007, Office Publisher 2007, Office Visio 2007 and Office Word 2007.

Microsoft has also added that the download will be delivered exclusively to customers running genuine copies of the Office application and that Office validation is mandatory.
