Wireless operator AT&T and Redmond-based software giant Microosft are finally gearing up for the near release of the long expected NoDo software update for the Windows Phone 7 devices available on the carrier's network.

Unfortunately, not all of them would taste the new update at this time, but only two of them, namely the LG Quantum and Samsung Focus, with HTC Surround expected to receive the new firmware in a month's time or so.

“The LG Quantum and Samsung Focus are now scheduling both the February update and the March “copy and paste” update. We’ve refreshed Where’s my phone update? to reflect the status changes to these models,” Eric Hautala, GM, Customer Experience Engineering, Microsoft, notes in a blog post.

He also explains that the two companies have already started the work on making the software update available for download for users out there.

According to Eric Hautala, the software for HTC Surround needed some more testing, this being the reason for which it was pushed back a little more.

“The updates we deliver contain a complex stew of software code. The content often includes not only our fixes and improvements but also software supplied by companies that make the phone itself and the chips inside it,” he notes.

“One of these third-party software “packages” earmarked for the HTC Surround needs additional testing by both Microsoft and AT&T. I apologize for the delay. As soon as I have more news, I’ll let you know.”

The good news, however, is that the new software update comes with two features that are exclusive for AT&T's customers. Most probably, this was the reason for which the update was delayed by over a week at the wireless carrier.

The first special AT&T feature would be support for the “WISPr” protocol, which should enable users to have their devices automatically connected to AT&T Wi-Fi hotspots when in range. The second feature is support for AT&T Address Book.

As previously reported, the software update should start landing on LG Quantum and Samsung Focus handsets at AT&T as soon as tomorrow, though no specific release date was officially unveiled for the time being.
