False positives create chaos

Microsoft has screwed things up for us users more than once, but they still manage to surprise me. A recent study showed that Microsoft products are the most vulnerable out there, fact which probably made them panic or something. And here's why I'm saying this - Hotmail has serious issues when dubbing spam. It's a good thing that they keep unwanted messages out of the inbox, but, as seen on several sites, many admins have complained that a lot of the messages that have been sent never reached their destination!

Now this is pretty bad - when some people send out mass messages, only several Hotmail recipients actually get the message. So, it seems that Microsoft seriously botched things up? again. Sure, I agree that their job isn't easy, but I think it's way better to get some spam messages once in a while, than not getting the important legitimate ones!

As seen on The Register, Hotmail routinely blocks mass e-mails sent by the MIS Sciences Corporation on behalf of universities and government agencies. These people are not sending out spam! The real problem is the fact that important messages do not get where they should! This could lead to severe consequences!

To be frank, I'm disappointed with Microsoft - first they sell us vulnerable products, then in an overzealous attempt to increase security, they make things even worse! Spam is something that bothers us all, no matter what e-mail client we use. Yet, Hotmail is the only one with these issues, sure, some spam filters generate false positives, but I've never heard of this problem with Yahoo! or any similar mail.

The Register informs that Microsoft officials have not yet commented on this - could this mean that they are silently fixing the problem? Nothing can be said for sure, but I hope that this problem gets fixed, as important messages are being sent via mass e-mail!
