14 DAY TRIAL // With Windows 10, Microsoft is bringing back the Start menu in an attempt to make the new operating system a friendlier environment for users updating from Windows 7, and recent builds are showing even more improvements supposed to help the company achieve this goal.
Joe Belfiore presented at Microsoft Ignite in Chicago the new Windows 10 build 10105, an unreleased version of the technical preview that was recently compiled by the company.
Just as expected since it's a brand new build of Windows 10, it comes with several new features that are not yet available for everyone, including a new Cortana UI that perfectly blends in with the overhauled desktop.
Start menu, jumplists
One of the features that will be coming back in Windows 10, in addition to the Start menu, will be the jumplists that allow users to quickly open specific locations on their PCs from this menu.
Previously, Microsoft decided to go for a rather basic Start menu, but as new builds were compiled, more new and old features were implemented to make the feature a little bit more helpful for both new and long-time Microsoft users.
At the same time, if you look at the screenshots below, it becomes obvious that the dark theme, which we saw one month ago in leaked builds and which is now available as well for insiders, is quickly becoming the default setting in Windows 10, so expect this visual style to be part of the RTM build as well.
Windows 10 is projected to see the light of day in the summer of 2015, but specifics are not yet available. Sources claim that July or August is very likely to witness the debut of the new OS, but it remains to be seen if these reports are indeed accurate or not.
One thing is for sure, though: Windows 10 is becoming a lot more familiar to Windows 7 users and that's definitely the best way to make sure people update.
