Microsoft has revealed some bad news for Halo Wars players, as the company will be taking down the official HaloWars.com website, essentially axing online features like leaderboards or player stat tracking.

Halo Wars, a real time strategy take on Microsoft's popular Halo franchise, will be getting a fifth Title Update on December 15, which will get the game ready for the termination of the website.

"There will be a fifth Title Update for Halo Wars. Unfortunately, it won't include many of the fixes that we all wanted it to include," reads the announcement on the site.

"This was a fairly significant amount of work, as we wanted to be sure that multiplayer for the game still functioned properly without HaloWars.com and other backend support."

Besides getting the game ready for the removal of the aforementioned online features, the patch will also fix some cutscene issues in the Theater mode in the game.

As the web site will be shut down, forum members are advised to go to the new Halo Wars section at the Halo Waypoint forums, where a new community will be created for the strategy game.

"In an effort to provide the Halo Wars community a lively, active, and well-moderated set of forums for discussion, we are soon going to be transitioning the Halo Wars forums to Halo Waypoint's forums."

Halo Wars was released in February last year by Microsoft, being the last title ever developed by the team at Ensemble Studios, which was also responsible for the extremely popular Age of Empires real time strategy series.

Halo Wars was praised after its release by Microsoft as the "best selling real-time strategy game on any current generation console".

Still, even all those sales didn't help it reach the huge amount of Halo fans that are only interested in first person shooters.
