Microsoft has not held a traditional news conference at the Gamescom 2011 trade event and has chosen to allow individual teams to talk on their own about future projects and about upcoming releases, which means that all those involved with Gears of War 3 faced a lot of questions about the future of the franchise.

At the Microsoft Play Day taking place at Gamescom 2011 Chris Kimmel, who is the executive producer working on Gears of War 3 on Microsoft's behalf, has stated, “Gears is a huge universe that Epic has built. Not only the game, but in the US, we also have comic books and novels that talk about different characters. For example, Jace is a new character in Gears 3 that came from the comic books. So there’s a rich universe there, there’s plenty of potential to do more, but right now we’re only talking about Gears 3.”

The Microsoft executive has made it clear that Epic is the company that drives the decisions linked to Gears of War at the moment and that any announcement about the future will not be coming without involvement from the developers.

He also refused to comment on the status of the rumors Gears of War movie, which was at one point close to entering production and has not been talked about since.

Kimmel was also happy to talk about the German release of Gears of War, saying that players who have not played the first two games in the series can catch up on most of the story of the series via a video that will be inserted during the initial stages and will have characters talking about what happened so far.

Gears of War was refused classification in Germany because of excessive violence.

The game arrives exclusively on the Xbox 360 on September 20.
