T-Mobile was the first carrier to announce it would add the affordable Lumia 640 smartphone to its portfolio, though the Magenta operator did not confirm when the device would go on sale.

Earlier today, another US-based carrier confirmed it would offer the Lumia 640, Cricket Wireless. The smartphone will be available for purchase beginning May 15 via participating Cricket stores, as well as online for $130 outright.

Cricket also announces it has teamed up with Microsoft to offer free services like Office 365 Personal and Skype calling to all customers who purchase from its official retail channels between May 15 and June 30.

As many of you probably know by now, Microsoft Lumia 640 ships with Windows Phone 8.1 Update 2 right out of the box.

Even though Lumia 640 is an affordable smartphone, the device comes with pretty decent specs by today's standards. For example, the handset sports a 5.0-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display that supports HD (720p) resolution that features Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating.

Decent specs, affordable price

In addition, Microsoft Lumia 640 is equipped with a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, an Adreno 305 graphics processing unit, 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory.

Obviously, the handset packs microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 128GB). Lumia 640 also features an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with autofocus, LED flash and full HD (1080p) video recording, as well as a secondary 1-megapixel camera in the front.

“Savvy consumers want value, affordability and simplicity – in addition to all the bells and whistles – and that’s what Cricket delivers. From day one, our mission has been to redefine what people expect from a no-contract carrier and we’re delivering.

“We were first to offer unlimited U.S. long distance . . . first to give unlimited text and picture messaging . . . first to provide unlimited music . . . and now we’re first to bring the Microsoft Lumia 640 to the U.S.” said Andy Smoak, head of devices for Cricket Wireless.
