The company initially announced the update would be available in early July

Bad news for Windows Phone fans waiting for the latest update to arrive on their smartphones, as Microsoft India has just announced Lumia Cyan will be available “this summer.”

Why is this bad news? Well, Microsoft India confirmed on June 29 that the Lumia Cyan update, also containing Windows Phone 8.1, would start rolling out worldwide in the first two weeks of July.

Given the fact that the first week of July has already gone and the deployment of the update has yet to kick off, also considering the recent announcement, it appears that Microsoft will not be releasing the Windows Phone 8.1 this week.

It looks like Microsoft India has been informed that Windows Phone 8.1 will not arrive so early this month, as previously forecasted, as the company issued the following short statement:

“Per latest update, Lumia Cyan enabled with new features & unique experiences is expected to begin rolling out around the world this summer.”

The initial tweet from Microsoft India that we reported on late last month said that “the Windows Phone 8.1 update will roll out to existing Windows Phone 8 users during the first two weeks of July.”

Although we were not sure whether the company was strictly referring to the availability of the update in India, the latest tweet published by Microsoft makes it all clear.

When Microsoft released Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview back in April, it also confirmed that the final version of the mobile platform would be released this summer.

Even though the company did not offer an exact release date for the major update, it did say that the launch date would depend on location, carrier and device. This means that Windows Phone 8.1 update will be available for compatible devices in stages.

Unfortunately, for the time being, only Nokia Lumia 925 owners in a few countries (Finland and Argentina) have been lucky enough to receive the Windows Phone 8.1 as a pilot project.

We also reported several days ago that Lumia 925 users in Spain might get the update this week as well, but other than that there isn’t any confirmation regarding the availability of the update for additional Nokia Lumia smartphone models.

It will be interesting to see exactly when Microsoft will start the rollout of the Windows Phone 8.1 update for all compatible smartphones given the fact that the Redmond-based company is now deploying its first Windows Phone 8.1 handsets (Lumia 930, 635 and 630) worldwide.
