We’re switching to Windows as a Service, the company says

Windows as a Service is the phrase that everyone in the media writes today, as Microsoft is making quite a big deal about it, given the fact that it’s planning to drop the traditional Windows model and switch to a completely new approach that would change the way we get updates.

Redmond is trying to embrace the rolling release concept that would bring users updates exactly when they’re ready, without having them wait 12 month or so to receive them. New stand-alone Windows versions would no longer be launched, but instead the company will focus on large updates for the core operating system that would be released, again, when they’re ready.

And the very first update should be ready in the fall, Microsoft now suggests, which means that it should arrive only a few months after the actual debut of the operating system.

Possible debut in October

In a blog post today, Microsoft says that its new rolling release strategy will come into effect starting this fall, sort of confirming recent speculation that a major Windows 10 update could launch later this year.

“Starting this fall, customers can expect ongoing innovation and security updates for their Windows 10 devices, including more advanced security and management capabilities for businesses,” Redmond says.

Previous speculation on this indicated that the first update for Windows 10 would arrive in October, probably together with Windows 10 Mobile, the new version of Windows Phone that would launch a few months after the PC sibling.

The first Windows 10 update, however, would be mostly about fixing bugs and issues that were found in the RTM version of the OS, but some new features are also expected. For instance, this update is likely to bring Cortana in more countries, as well as support for extensions in Microsoft Edge.

Needless to say, these are all just rumors for the time being, but with Microsoft already finalizing its plans for Windows 10, it’s pretty clear that we have some very exciting months ahead.
