Denim is the latest firmware for Nokia/Microsoft Lumia

Microsoft started the Lumia Denim rollout in December and since then only few devices actually received it, which did nothing more than to create more confusion among those who previously purchased a Nokia, now Microsoft, Lumia Windows Phone device.

Add to that an odd issue that turns Cyan into Denim all of a sudden even if no update was received and you get a really controversial firmware rollout that does more harm than good.

In an updated FAQ on its official page, Microsoft explains what it’s actually happening on some devices and why a number of phones are said to be running Denim even if no updates were received.

“Lumia Denim is the marketing name for latest Lumia software update, which is a combination of firmware, OS (operating system) and Lumia exclusive applications. Exact contents coming with Lumia Denim vary depending on the device model, and some devices are not requiring new firmware for the new features to be enabled, so firmware can in some cases remain unchanged,” the updated page reads.

No change in firmware version

Basically, it all comes down to the firmware version number that your device shows in settings. Based on this, you could get Denim or not, Microsoft suggests. In case you are already running the very latest firmware version, you won’t get an update, but under Extras + Info you should be able to see that your device is running Denim.

That’s exactly what caused confusion in the last few weeks, as many users reported that their devices were upgraded to Denim without any update deployed on the phones.

In most of the cases, this was triggered by the PfD updates, as devices enrolled in the program are obviously running a newer OS version than those sticking to the official version.

Right now, Microsoft is shipping Denim to more devices worldwide, including those in Europe, while the company is also giving the final touches to the preview build of Windows Phone 10.

Microsoft will hold an event on January 21 to discuss its Windows plans and Windows Phone will also be on the company’s agenda for the show, so expect more details to be provided next week.
