The initial release will only be available on PC

We reported over the weekend that Microsoft doesn't plan to bring the Edge browser to all platforms at the same time and in the same state of functionality.

One particular feature that won't be available at the same time on PC and phones is extension support, which Microsoft confirmed it would implemented into Edge browser.

The Edge team has already informed fans that even plugin support on phones will be integrated a bit different due to battery consumption and memory constraints. They also said that extension support might not be available for Edge browser in phones at launch.

This means that Windows 10 Mobile, while it will come with a fully functional version of Edge browser, the application won't have plugin support soon after release.

Today, they have been clearer when asked by someone if there will be extension support for phones. According to one of the members of the development team, the addition of plugin support is “a long term goal.”

Various constraints prevent Microsoft from making extension support available sooner

He also confirmed once again that the initial release would be PC only, once Windows 10 gets launched this summer. Apparently, the main reasons for Microsoft's decision are the high number of constraints that need to be overcome in order to implement extension support for Edge browser on phones.

As mentioned earlier, memory and power are among the most worrisome for the smooth operation of Edge plugins, but Microsoft also said that the UI real estate is another aspect that needs to be taken into consideration.

So basically not even today's processors and high amount of RAM would be able to handle some of the extensions people may want to install in their Edge browser.

Obviously, it has everything to do with optimization and Microsoft needs time to find the perfect formula to bring Edge browser extensions to phones. For now, they need to focus on the PC version, which is just around the corner.
