Lumia 640 will be among the first to get the update

Microsoft is expected to launch Windows 10 for phones in the fall of 2015, a few months after the PC version sees the light of day, but the company is believed to be planning a global rollout in stages, which means that only some devices would get it at first.

While the software giant hasn't detailed these plans at BUILD 2015 this week, a new video starring Scandinavian Microsoft General Manager Ossi Korpela not only that confirms the first model that would get Windows 10 when the new OS becomes available but also comes as a suggestion that this gradual rollout is very likely.

As WMPU notes, Korpela says that the newly launch Lumia 640 would be part of the first batch of Windows Phone models to receive the Windows 10 treatment, but no other specifics were provided.

Lumia 640 was presented by Microsoft last month and comes with a 5-inch display, quad-core 1.2 GHz processor, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 0.9-megapixel front unit for selfies and video calls, and 8 GB of internal storage.

It also features 1 GB of RAM, so it'll get the full Windows 10 experience. Microsoft said that at least 512 MB of RAM would be needed to receive the Windows 10 update, but devices coming with only this amount of memory would lack some features because of their limited hardware.

Windows 10 for phones to launch in October

Microsoft confirmed at BUILD that Windows 10 for PCs would launch during the summer without a phone version, revealing that the latter was still in early development stages and would only arrive later this year.

People close to the matter have told us that Redmond is aiming at an October release date if development goes according to plan, but if the aforementioned rollout approach is indeed embraced, some devices could get Windows 10 early next year.

New flagships running Windows 10 are also planned and they will all launch together with the new operating system to demonstrate its full capabilities.
