Windows Phone 7, the new mobile operating system that Microsoft brought to the market in October last year, was reportedly packing a bug through which devices running under it would send large amounts of data each and every day, and it seems that the company has managed to nail down the problem.

According to the Redmond-based software giant, the problem was caused by a third-party solution that Windows Phone 7 devices accessed frequently, and not by the platform itself.

Users reported that their devices sent great amounts of data via the 3G network to which they were connected even at times when WiFi was turned on and they were in a WiFi zone, something that would have resulted in large phone bills for users.

Microsoft announced not too long ago that it was investigating the problem, and it seems that they already managed to find the issue and to contact the third party to solve the problem.

“We have determined that a third-party solution commonly accessed from Windows Phones is configured in a manner that potentially cause larger than expected data downloads,” a Microsoft spokesperson stated, according to seattlepi.com.

“We are in contact with the third party to assist them in making the necessary fixes, and are also pursuing potential workarounds to address the configuration issue in case those are needed. At this point in our investigation, we believe this is responsible for most of the reported incidents.”

The company did not offer additional info on the said third-party, but said that only a small number of Windows Phone 7 users were affected.

“We are investigating additional potential root causes for the remainder of the reports,” the spokesperson stated.

“A small (low single-digit) percentage of Windows Phone customers have reported being affected. We are continuing to investigate this issue and will update with additional information and guidance as it becomes available.”

There are no details available on when would the fix for this issue emerge, but chances are that it might not be too long before users see the data consumption on their Windows Phone 7 devices going down.
