On April 9, Redmond-based software giant Microsoft announced the winner of its Windows Phone Next App Star competition that kicked off last year, and that saw 9,137 entries from 79 markets.

Several weeks ago, the company brought the competition to Facebook, offering users the possibility to vote for their favorite Windows Phone apps that rivaled for the great prize, and Wikipedia by Rudy Huyn was the last to stand up.

There were 64 finalists in the challenge when the contest was brought to the public, with daily rounds between various apps, so that only one would remain in the end.

Wikipedia by Rudy Huyn entered the final stage of the competition along with ProShot by Eddie Kezeli, Microsoft’s Todd Brix explains in a blog post.

“To give you insight into these two apps: ProShot is a feature-packed lens app with such an intuitive UI it can be enjoyed by the professional photographer and the weekend warrior alike,” he explains.

“Wikipedia takes rich web content and brings it to life with Windows Phone design elements and features like NFC, speech, and Live Tiles.”

Wikipedia by Rudy Huyn will be featured in a Windows Phone primetime television commercial in the US, Brix continued, as this was the big prize announced from the beginning for the Windows Phone Next App Star challenge.

“Today we’re focused on celebrating Rudy and the achievements of all our Next App Star finalists. In the coming weeks you can expect posts with learnings from the competition that you can apply to your situation – from app creation to marketing tips. And you’re all stars in our book,” Brix also notes.

Those who would like to learn more on the application will find it available on this page on Softpedia. They can also have a look at the video below for additional details on it. This Facebook page will deliver more on Wikipedia’s developer, Rudy Huyn, who comes from Rennes, France.
