Microsoft Amalga, the evolution of MedStar Health System's Azyxxi platform, is designed as a unified intelligence system aimed to be integrated into hospitals and health systems. The Redmond company announces that, as of April 9, 2008, Amalga has become commercially available across the U.S. and Europe. Amalga is essentially just one piece of the Microsoft enterprise-class health solutions puzzle, a portfolio of products that enables hospital enterprises to centralize clinical, administrative and financial information. At this point in time, there is no connection between Amalga and Microsoft's HealthVault health service, but the Redmond company is working on bridging the two in the future.

"This is an important milestone for Amalga," said Steve Shihadeh, vice president, Microsoft Health Solutions Group. "This release benefits from over 10 years of development at Washington Hospital Center and feedback from some of the world's most reputable health organizations. Amalga fulfills its promise to unify information across the health enterprise and open up new opportunities to improve patient care, organizational quality and operational efficiency. We look forward to demonstrating the value these leading organizations are realizing from the use of Amalga."

The Amalga unified intelligence system is complemented by additional resources such as the Microsoft Amalga Hospital Information System, a hospital information system tailored for the needs of hospitals in developing and emerging countries; and the Microsoft Amalga RIS/PACS. Amalga functions as a bridge between the disparate information systems generally associated with the clinical, administrative and financial management of hospitals and health systems, permitting seamless access to data.

"The amount of data in hospitals is increasing exponentially. One of healthcare providers' biggest challenges is that care givers can't access patient information when and where they need it," explained Graham Harrop, Microsoft Health Solutions Group, Director - Europe and Middle East. "Amalga offers proven solutions that bring together information from across the healthcare enterprise into one easily accessible view."
