Earlier this month, New York Attorney General, Eric T. Schneiderman, proposed that the state of New York in the US ban the sale of cosmetics and beauty products that have microbeads listed as one of their ingredients.

Just days later, Assemblyman Richard Bloom came forward with the very same proposal, except that the state he hopes will soon banish microbeads is not New York, but California, Eco Watch reports.

Should legislators in these states agree to give the thumbs up to said proposals, companies manufacturing cosmetics and beauty products will likely be left with no choice except phase out microbeads or risk losing two very important markets.

As previously reported, microbeads are bits and pieces of plastic that are added to cosmetics and beauty products to help with exfoliation.

The trouble with them is that they have a gift for going down the drain and then working their way into the environment.

In time, they collect harmful chemicals on their surface, which means that they become an even greater threat to natural ecosystems.
