Yesterday we heard that famous Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender would play the leading role in the long-awaited Assassin’s Creed movie but this doesn’t mean that he’ll bring to life well-known characters like Desmond, Altair, or Ezio, according to Ubisoft.

The Assassin’s Creed movie has been a long time in development but only yesterday did we hear that progress is being made, as Ubisoft confirmed that Michael Fassbender, of X-Men: First Class or Prometheus fame, will play the leading role, and co-produce the flick through his DMC Film company.

Since then, fans have begun speculating what role Fassbender would play, highlighting the main protagonist, Desmond, as a possible pick, but also other heroes like Altair or Ezio, who starred in games from the franchise.

A Ubisoft representative has now talked about Fassbender’s role and emphasized that it’s not yet clear who he’ll get to play, as a writer hasn’t been recruited just yet.

"Fassbender will play the lead role, but it's too soon to say exactly which character that will be," the Ubisoft spokesperson told Joystiq. "The storyline isn't bound by a certain era or even a set of characters. That kind of freedom gives us great flexibility in creating the movie.”

The spokesperson quickly added that Ubisoft would, however, try to respect the stories already told by the games and make sure that the movie would do the plot justice.

"We're also taking the responsibility of maintaining fidelity with the overall story and brand very seriously," the rep added.

Assassin’s Creed fans already know quite a few heroes, from the current-day Desmond, to his ancestors, like Altair, who starred in the first game, Ezio, who appeared in 2, Brotherhood, and Revelations, or Connor, who’s set to make an appearance in this year’s Assassin’s Creed 3.

Different comic books, novels, and short movies also focused on different assassins, so who knows what role Fassbender will actually play.
