The team behind the GOG digital distribution service is announcing that, in cooperation with publishers Deep Silver and Nordic Games, it is launching five major new titles without any sort of attached Digital Rights Management solutions.

The newly introduced games are Saints Row 2, Metro: Last Light Redux, Saints Row 3, Darksiders 1 and Darksiders 2.

All of them are offered with discounts until May 18 and can be bought right now on GOG.

The Last Light Redux version of Metro introduces both titles in the series and allows gamers to explore a story set in the post-apocalyptic underground transport system of Moscow and the heavily radiated regions above them.

The two Darksiders titles offer an action-packed hack-and-slash experience that gives players a chance to become Death and fight a wide range of other mythological creatures.

Saints Row 2 and 3 are offering an open-world experience that's underpinned by both action moments and a lot of over-the-top humorous sequences.

Oleg Klapovsky, vice president of business development at GOG, states, "It's not every day that we see major games like these, unchained from any forms of DRM. With today's big-name DRM-free releases, and the impending The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt premiere, we anticipate even more major titles to follow suit."

The company also says that it has recently managed to go over the 1,000 available games milestone.

GOG is taking on Steam with the Galaxy client

GOG started life as Good Old Games, with a focus on titles that were classics in their genres but were sometimes unplayable on modern machines.

The company created new releases that ran smoothly on all systems and often also offered a range of extra content.

The name change to GOG was designed to show that the organization has bigger ambitions, clearly visible in the open-beta launch of the GOG Galaxy client.

The service is clearly designed to mount a strong challenge for the Valve-created Steam, which currently holds the dominant position on the digital distribution market on the PC.

It will be interesting to see what unique features, other than the lack of DRM, GOG can deliver in order to differentiate itself and to attract a wider range of customers.
